Skin disorder vitiligo:

specific cells that are supposed to produce pigments that give the natural colour to the skin. Destruction of these cells causes Vitiligo. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo usually turns white.
Typical of skin ailments, causes of vitiligo are also by and large, unknown. The disease is known to affect about 1% of the population of the world, does not discriminate between sexes and the onset is generally in the teens or before the age of 20.About 30% of the people suffering from vitiligo have their genes to blame for the condition. Hereditary cases account for 1/3rd of the cases.
The early signs of Vitiligo
People who might get vitiligo, will notice white patches n the exposed areas of the skin,
Initially.Palms, feet, face, forehead are the areas which get affected first. The condition then spreads to other areas like armpits, groin, chest etc. Vitiligo may develop gradually over different parts of the body or simultaneously.Vitiligo can also cause premature graying of the hair, eyebrows, beard, and eyebrows.
How is Vitiligo Diagnosed?
Diagnosis of vitiligo is done on the basis of facts collected regarding the patient's medical history, occurrence of the disorder in the family, any sunburn or rash like formation at the vitiligo spot. Stress or depression status and any other physical ailment that the patient might have suffered in the preceding 2/3 months. Further investigations can be conducted by a small biopsy of the affected skin, blood sample test for blood-cell count and thyroid condition. The blood test is also required to indicate if the patient has any other form of anti-immune problem.
Coping with depression
A person with vitiligo is bound to suffer considerable anxiety and stress as the disorder, directly affects the outward physical appearance .Since vitiligo is more prone to attack the younger generation, it causes all he more stress in them. Youngsters are very concerned and conscious about their appearance and can feel extremely depress in this situation. The doctors attending to vitiligo patients display empathy and genuine concern towards all such cases. The family and the friends also must form a strong support group so that the person does not get into bouts of depression. There are a number of cosmetic options available to mask the condition and these may be used on the doctor's advice.
The objective of the treatment process is to restore the skin's color by providing healthy melanocytes to the skin. The process allows skin to restart producing pigments and maintain the natural colour of skin. Re-pigmentation of skin can be a very long drawn process spread over 12to 24 months.Depending on the condition of vitiligo, a patient may be given medication therapy or even surgery.Medical treatment involves use of steroids, topical or oral psoralen photo chemotherapy.
Grafting Surgery involves replantation of skin from another area of the body from the patient. Grafting, as it is referred to, means plucking a portion of good skin from one area and putting it on the depigmented area. These procedures run the risk of infection or non-acceptance of alien tissues.
Tattooing is implanting just the pigments into the affected areas.Injecting pigments helps restore the skin colour and is extensively used for treating vitiligo near the mouth or lips. Though, tattooing is quite successful, it can fade over time.
More and more skin care companies are introducing cosmetics for the patients to mask the vitiligo areas and thus continue to lead a confident routine without the complexes about vitiligo. Coping with vitiligo is a lot mote psychological than medicinal and people are learning to overcome this one too.
